Roots in Your Sewer Pipe Tacoma Lakewood University Place Puyallup
What to Do If You Have Roots in Your Sewer Pipe By Aram Avedisian
So you had a plumber over to your home to clear a drain blockage and you end up finding out you have a drain pipe full or tree roots. What now?
Well, depending on how bad the root problem is, you may or may not have to replace the main sewer pipe. Yes, you read that correctly - you don't always need to replace your drain if you have roots. A knowledgeable plumber will be able to save you lots of money by suggesting alternatives to sewer pipe replacement.
As a Los Angeles Plumber who has done plenty of Los Angeles drain cleaning (Los Angeles has plenty of sewers with root infiltration), I have learned how to deal with those pesky sewer roots, and I also understand that not everyone ca afford a full sewer replacement. Aside from that, (as I mentioned before...) sewer replacement is NOT always necessary.
So your plumber told you that you have roots. What's the next step? Well, a proper video inspection of the sewer pipe is needed to determine the best course of action. If the pipe itself has any large cracks, is split, broken or otherwise compromised, any plumber will suggest replacement and I would agree. However, if the pipe appears to be in good shape (other than the small cracks where the roots are coming in) AND the roots haven't completely blocked the pipe, then you have an option.
The proper drain cleaning tools combined with a chemical root treatment will take care of a minor to moderate root problem. Depending on how long the problem has been present, it may take some time to properly clean the drain of roots, but it is very possible and your plumber can discuss your options as far as chemical treatments.
I always recommend a product called RootX - a foaming root killer that is effective in keeping a pipe free of roots for a minimum of one year and in most cases, up to two years. You should know that any chemical treatment will require you to not use ANY of the drains in your home for at least a few hours. RootX should ONLY be used after a proper cleaning or else it is useless.
If you do indeed need to replace your sewer pipe, then you have two options - trenchless sewer replacement or the conventional "open trench" method. The difference between the two will be discussed in another article.
